History of Goodes Creek Baptist Church
Before the year 1846 Goodes Creek Church was a Methodist church by the name of Goodes Chapel. After the Methodists moved out, a Holiness congregation used the church building for worship services for some time, then moved out also.
After some lapse of time the Baptists began to meet here for worship services. In the year 1908 the Baptists organized and named the church Goodes Creek Baptist Church. Their first pastor was Rev. C. M. Teal. Since that time the church has had nineteen different pastors. Pastor, Rev. Hubert Street, has served from January, 1976 to 1990.
In the year 1911 a new building was needed and was built by the men of the church. This building served well until 1933, when the church began to grow. Then a new building was considered. Some of the members wanted to move to the old vacant school building about one mile northeast of the present location, and some wanted to build at the present site. The results were that about twenty-six members moved to the old school building, and formed Calvary Baptist Church. The remaining eighty-eight (estimated) members remained, and during the great Depression started plans for building a new church building.
At this time Rev. T. H. Harris was called as pastor. The old building was torn down and services were held at the home of Mr. J. O. Scruggs until the new building was completed.
In 1944 Rev. W. T. Luckadoo was called as pastor, and he served until 1948. During his ministry a new building was built. Services began in this new building February 9,1947. (He served again from 1953-1956.)
In 1976 a new building began to be needed and funds were raised In 1978, on April 2, a dedication service was held for the new sanctuary. The present building seats approximately 360 people and cost approximately $140,000.00 furnished. The old sanctuary has since been remodeled into Sunday school classrooms.
God has richly blessed this church down through the years, and our prayer is that His continued blessings may rest on all His work.
Our church is located on the Goodes Creek Road in the Chase Community. The church received its name from Mr. M L Goode who gave the property on which the church was built in that beginning long ago. In April of 2005 Goodes Creek celebrated 100 years.
